Grade and Review Assessment Results
Grade Submissions
You can grade assessments as students submit their work. To grade an assessment, you will need to open the Grading view of the assessment.
Grade by Student
- From the sidebar, click Student.
- Select a student.
The student card will display the student's points for the assessment. Select Omit to exclude the points on this assessment from being calculated into the overall grade.
While multiple-choice and True or False responses are graded automatically, you must manually grade any written and file upload responses. The points you enter for each question are automatically updated and displayed in the total points field for the assessment.
- Enter specific feedback in the Comments field.
- If the assessment is enabled for late submissions, and the student has submitted the assessment after the close time, then select Mark as Late.
- Click Return. Refer to Return Assessment for more information.
Grade by Question
- From the sidebar, click Question.
- Select a question.
- Select the specific student response you want to view and grade.
- Enter the points for the specific response.
- Enter specific feedback in the Comment field.
View Results
- From the Assessments menu, select the assessment you want to view.
- Click Results.

View Class Performance
- From the Assessments menu, select the assessment you want to view.
- Click Results, then select Section.
- Select Overview to view a summary of the results for this class.
- Select Scores to view a distribution of scores on a bar graph. You can click on any bar in the graph to view students who received a score that fell within a specific range. Click on a student to view their results for this assessment.
- Select Questions to view the average score per question on a bar graph. You can click on a bar to view students' scores for a particular question. You can click on a particular student to view their results for this assessment or click on View More to view results for a specific question.
- Select Time to view time spent on this assessment on a bar graph. Click on a bar to view students who spent time within a specific time frame. You can click on a particular student to view their results for this assessment.
View Student Results
- From the Assessments menu, select the assessment you want to view.
- Click Results, then select Section.
- From the Filter By Students drop-down, select All Students. You can also choose from the following options:
- Custom grade range
- Unsubmitted only
- Below section average
- Above section average
- Select a student.
- Select Overview to view a summary of the results for the student.
- Select Questions to view the student's score per question and the section average displayed on a bar graph.
- Select Time to view the total time spent on this assessment, along with average section time,
View Results to a Question
- From the Assessments menu, select the assessment you want to view.
- Click Results. then select Questions.
- Select a question or Filter by Average Score.
- Select Overview to view a summary of the responses to the question.
- Select Scores to view the distribution of scores displayed on a bar graph. You can click on any bar in the graph to view students who received a score that fell within a specific range. Click on a student to view their results for this assessment.
Select Responses to view a distribution of responses displayed on a bar graph. You can click on any bar in the graph to view students who selected a particular response.
The Responses option is available only for Multiple Choice and True/False questions.
Return Online Assessments
Students will be able to view the following only when assessments are returned:
- The final grade and points earned on each question.
- Their response to each question and the correct multiple-choice or true/false answer.
- Comments on the assessment or individual questions.
Return Manually
This is the default option when creating an assessment.
- From the Assessments menu, select the assessment you want to view.
- Click the gear icon.
- Click Grading.
- Select which students to return the assessment to:
- Single student
- Click a student, then select Return.
- All students
- Return All Assessments: Select this option to return all assessments to students, including resubmitted or ungraded work. While you can update point values for the entire assessment and individual questions after returning the assessment, PowerSchool recommends using this option only after all assessments have been graded.
- Single student
Return Automatically
Written responses or file upload questions cannot be auto-graded, so a student will see a lower grade until you manually grade these. It is ideal to use this option for assessments with multiple-choice and true/false types of questions.
- From the Assessments menu, select the assessment you want to view.
- Click the gear icon.
- Click Grading.
- Select how you want to return the assessment:
- Return Upon Completion: Returns the assessment when a student submits an attempt.
- Return at Close Time: Returns the assessment to all students once it has closed.
