Course materials: Assignments (instructors)
Create an assignment
Navigate to a course. Alternatively, click Add Materials from within a folder.
Select Add Materials and choose Add Assignment from the list. Alternatively, click Add Materials from within a folder.
Enter the assignment information. Refer to the Assignment field details and Assignment option details tables for more information.
Click Create. The description and any additional files or links are displayed on the assignment, along with the Submissions and comment tools. From this page, manage assignment submissions, grade students, and participate in the comments area.
Assignment field details
Field | Details |

Description | Enter directions for students to complete the assignment. |
Availability and due date | Select the due date to be displayed in the Course Calendar and Upcoming area. Overdue notifications are also enabled if a student fails to submit the assignment by the due date. |
Category | Select a category. The default category, Ungraded, is not displayed in your gradebook. |
Period | Select Automatically Publish Grades to immediately display student grades in the gradebook for parents and students. If Automatically Publish Grades is disabled, this setting will also be disabled in PowerTeacher Pro when synced with PowerSchool SIS. Other SIS integrations will ignore this setting. |
Collected Type | Select Collected/Mastery to disable traditional scoring for the assignment.

Scale/Rubric | Select a scale or rubric from the list. |
Learning Objectives | Align custom learning objectives, Common Core, Next Generation Science Standards, ACTFL Standards for Foreign Language Learning, College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education, AERO Curriculum Frameworks, or State Standards.

Assignment option details
Options | Details |

Individually Assign | Displays the assignment to specific members of the course or grading group. |
Submissions | Allows the student to submit work. You can remove the ability to submit work after the due date has passed. |
Grade Statistics | Displays the assignment statistics to students via an icon located with the assignment submissions. |
Comments | Allows students to post comments. |
Count in Grade | Includes the assignment in final grade calculations. If Count in Grade is disabled, the setting will also be disabled in PowerTeacher Pro when synced with PowerSchool SIS. Other SIS integrations will ignore this setting. |
PowerBuddy | Allows PowerBuddy chat in the assignment.

Copy to Courses | Copy the assignment with the current settings and options to another course you administer. |
Submit an assignment for a student
Navigate to the course.
Select Course Options, and choose View Course As from the list.
Choose the student to impersonate.
Choose the assignment to submit on the student’s behalf.
Enter the assignment content as needed for the course.
For elementary-themed courses, enter the assignment content, and then click I’m Done!
For secondary-themed courses, click Submit Assignment. Then, either upload or create the submission. If your district has enabled access to student resources, you can choose from the student’s Schoology resources to import with their assignment submission.
Submitted assignments
You will receive a notification when a student submits an assignment. Access submissions from the assignments in the course or the assignments listed in the Calendar. Download or review each file, or download all assignments in a bulk .zip file.
The Download All option has a limit of 500MB. If the submissions exceed this limit, download submissions individually.
Grade and return assignments
Select a submitted assignment to review and annotate the submission by posting comments, uploading a file, drawing, and more.
Enter a Grade based on the grading scale or rubric and add a Comment. Your comment will be displayed in the gradebook and the Grades area of the course. Choose not to display the comments by clearing Show to Student. After entering a grade and a comment, click Submit.
Return the assignment to the student by clicking Save Changes.
The following file types are supported: CSV, DOC, DOCX, DXF, EPS, GIF, HTM, HTML, JPEG, JPG, MP3, MP4, MOV, ODP, ODS, ODT, PDF, PNG, PPT, PPTX, PSD, RTF, SXW, TIFF, TXT, WAV, WMV, WPD, WPS, XLS, XLSB, XLSX, and XML.
Apple Pages, Numbers, or Keynote files will not be converted. Instead, download these submissions.
Annotate all file types, such as media files, using the annotation tools.
You can upload unlimited files, but each must be uploaded individually. Each file has a size limit of 512 MB
If using a third-party annotation program, upload your revised document to the comments/discussion area of the student's submission.
If you plan to have students submit multiple revisions of the same assignment, enter comments so you can review the history of submissions and comments.
To delete any comments you or the student posted, hover over the comment, select X, and then click Submit.
