Grade setup: Final grade settings
Customize how final grades are calculated and displayed for students and parents in Grade Setup.
Grade Setup is not supported in courses containing more than 10,000 members.
Navigate to a course, select Grade Setup, and update Final Grade Settings.
Gradebook scale
Determine the scale used for the overall score.
Gradebook scale options | Details |
---|---|
Numeric | Displays the overall score as a percentage. |
A+/- | Displays the overall score as a letter grade. |
If you’ve created a custom grading scale for your course, select it in the Scales section of Grade Set Up.
Calculated grades
Select Round Period/Final Grades to round the calculated grading period and overall percentage scores to the nearest whole number.
Rounded grades are also used to determine aggregate grades, such as semester grades combined for the final year grade. In these cases, grades are rounded at the lowest applicable level, combined, and then rounded again.
You cannot use this option if a custom grading scale is used as the final grade scale.
Control grading columns in gradebook
Choose from the following options to manage the grading columns.
Grading column options | Details |
---|---|
Course override column | Adds a blank column, indicated by a yellow eraser icon, where you can manually enter a final grade.
|
Hide Grading Category score columns | Displays the average grade for each category and hides category summary grade columns in the gradebook. |
Grade Period Override Column | Adds an override column for each grading period for the course. The calculated grade displays if you don't enter an override. |
Total points column | Adds a column that displays each student's total points earned for the entire marking period. This option is useful for courses that use total points instead of a traditional grade scale or any gamified class or course. |
Total points column calculation details
The Total Points column displays the total points a student has earned across the entire marking period. The column header displays the total possible points for the course and cannot be customized per student.
This calculation ignores:
Grading categories and weights
Individually assigned items
Exceptions and excused assignments
Additionally, when course materials are individually assigned, the Total Points column still reflects the total points for all graded items, even for students who were not assigned certain materials.
To ensure the Total Points column is accurate, unpublish ungraded or unsubmitted assignments to prevent discrepancies between the points displayed and the actual total possible points.
If using extra credit, avoid adding it through a grade column that affects all students. Instead, add extra credit within an existing graded item or create a zero-point assignment in an existing grading category. Using the course override column may hide the extra credit if overall grades are hidden from students.
When excusing a course material for a student, the Total Points column does not update to reflect the new number of points possible. Therefore, a custom grade is not displayed in this column and will not reflect the same score shown in the Overall column. However, the student's percentage does update to reflect the excused assignment.
Exception code settings
Select Disable automatic scoring of missing exceptions as 0 to allow course administrators to use the Missing exception code without penalizing students with a score of 0.
If you change this setting after any grades are entered for a course, it will affect all graded assignments for that course that have been marked as Missing.
Visibility settings
When Members can review the student grade report is selected , you can choose to hide specific report details.
Visibility options | Details |
---|---|
Hide overall grades in student grade report | Excludes an overall score from student reports and the students' Grades tab in the course. This may be a suitable option if your school does not report overall grades for the course across multiple grading periods. |
Hide grading period grades in student grade report | Excludes grading period scores from student reports and the students' Grades tab in the course. You cannot customize which grading period grades you hide or display. Hiding the grading period grade from student reports also hides the category-level grades from the student report. |
Hide total points achieved in student grade report | Excludes total points achieved from student reports and the students' Grades tab in the course. |
If you hide the overall grade, the student does not see any overall grade in your course. Students see neither the calculated grade nor the score you enter in the override column when you select Hide overall grades from student reports. This also applies to hiding and overriding grading period grades.
