Password protection for course and managed assessments

Course admins can set a password for course assessments and managed assessments that students will be required to enter to begin a new attempt or resume an existing attempt on them.

Passwords are set to Disable by default.

Set a password

  1. Naviage to the assessment.

  2. Click Actions and select Edit.

  3. Click the Password field and select Enable.

  4. Enter the password that students must enter to begin a new attempt or resume an existing attempt on the assessment.

    • Passwords must be at least five characters and cannot exceed 50 characters.

    • Passwords do not require any special characters.

    • Passwords are case sensitive.

    • Spaces entered at the beginning or end of the password are removed, but spaces in between valid characters are saved.

  5. Click Save Changes.

Instructors can change or remove the password at any time. Students already in a test can continue without interruption. If a student refreshes the page or leaves the test, they must enter the current password to resume. If the password has changed, they must enter the new password.

Linked sections

Instructors with linked sections can control the assessment password for each section. Password settings work the same way as enabling or disabling submissions.

  • To use one password for all linked sections, select All Sections.

  • To set different passwords for specific sections, select Select Sections to Customize and enter a password for each section.

Instructors can require a password for some sections but not others.

Student experience

When an assessment requires a password, students are prompted to enter the password any time they start a new attempt or resume an existing one.

When a student enters the correct password and clicks Start, they can successfully begin or resume an attempt.

Students must enter the password that is currently set for the section they are enrolled in. When a student enters an incorrect password, an error is displayed and they are prompted to try again.
