Question banks for tests and quizzes

Overview

Question banks let you create a repository of test questions to use in tests and quizzes.

You can create question banks and add test or quiz questions to question banks in:

  • Resources, both personal and group

  • Courses

Question banks are separate from item banks for course assessments in your personal and group resources. You can convert a test and quiz question bank to a course assessment item bank.

Create question banks in Resources

  1. Select Resources and choose Personal or Group.

  2. Click Add Resources and choose Add Question Bank from the list.

  3. Enter the information and click Create.

Add questions from Resources

  1. Select Resources and choose Personal or Group.

  2. Select the question bank.

  3. Click Add Question and choose an option from the list.

  4. Enter the information and click Complete Question.

Questions added to tests or quizzes from question banks are copied not linked. Changes made to questions in question banks do not update the copies in tests or quizzes.

Create question banks from a course

  • The option to create a test or quiz is not available in Schoology Basic.

  • Importing a course from another system may also import question banks.

  1. Navigate to a course.

  2. Select the test or quiz whose questions you want to save in a question bank.

  3. Select Questions.

  4. Add questions by:

    • Selecting Options and choosing Add all Questions to Bank

    • Clicking the question's gear icon and choosing Add to Bank.

  5. Select the question bank or create a new one.

  6. Click Add Questions.

If you add questions from a question bank, you can't add them to another question bank.

Add questions from a question bank to a test/quiz

After creating a question bank, build tests/quizzes using questions from the banks. You can add individual questions from a question bank or select questions from multiple question banks.

Add individual questions from a question bank

  2. Select Add Materials and choose Add Test/Quiz from the list.
Alternatively, select a previously created test/quiz.

  6. Select the question bank from which you want to import questions.

Alternatively, select Auto-select, enter the number of questions to add, and click Select. All students in the course receive the same set of questions.

  8. Enter a value for each question to set its point value.
Alternatively, set a consistent point value for each question by clicking Set Points and entering a value in Points Per Question.

  9. Click Add Questions.

Add a random selection of questions from one or more question banks

Add test/quiz questions to a question bank

If you created test/quiz questions from a course using Add Question, you can save the questions to your resources for future use.

  1. Navigate to a course and select the test/quiz.

  2. Select Questions.

  3. Click Options and choose Add Questions to Bank from the list.

  4. Select the questions to save or Select All.

  5. Choose an existing Question Bank or select New Question Bank.

  6. Click Add Questions.

If your test/quiz includes short answer/essay questions aligned with rubrics, the rubrics will not stay with the questions when added to the question bank. You will need to re-attach the rubric to the question.

Question tracking

Use question tracking to:

  • Evaluate questions in certain tests or quizzes by exporting question results.

  • Prevent teachers from changing test or quiz questions or answers after the question is used in a test.

  • Require instructors to use a standard question bank for certain tests or quizzes.

Select Enable Question Tracking when creating a new question bank to track each question in the question bank after they are added to a test or quiz. Tracked questions are assigned an Associated Question ID, linking them to a locked question bank. The ID stays the same across all tests or quizzes so you can analyze question data across courses.

Review questions in the bank for errors. When Enable Question Tracking is enabled for a question bank, the questions will become locked after using it in a test or quiz. You cannot edit questions in the bank or the test or quiz to ensure accurate tracking of questions used in test and quizzes.

Question tracking best practices

  • Advise instructors to use questions from locked question banks only after you've given them permission to use the questions.

  • If you notice a mistake in a locked question, advise the teacher to manually override the grade to the question in the test or quiz where the question is used. Then, create a new version of the question with the correct information.

  • If you mistakenly created a locked question bank, create a new one without selecting Enable Question Tracking. Copy the questions from the locked bank into the new bank.

Analyze tracked questions

  1. Navigate to a test or quiz for which you want to analyze results.

  2. Click the gear icon and select Export Stats.

  3. Select the users and information to export.

  4. Click Export.

  5. From Transfer History, download the file.

Disable question tracking

  1. Navigate to the question bank and click the bank’s gear icon.

  2. Select Disable Question Tracking.

You cannot disable question tracking or delete tracked questions when questions from the bank are being used in a test or quiz.
