Student completion rules (enterprise)
Overview
Student Completion Rules are requirements placed on course folders and course materials that enable teachers to structure their course flow and create self-paced learning for students. Depending on the item type, the following requirements are available:
Must complete
Must view the item
Must post a comment/reply
Must make a submission
Must score at least
Student Completion Rules are not available with Schoology Basic.
You can add multiple completion rules on a single item, but you cannot add the same rule on the same item more than once.
If a student reports completing a rule but can’t proceed to the next required item, recheck the student’s progress.
Set completion rules for folders
Set completion rules for course folders so students must complete the folder before progressing to the next one.
Navigate to a course.
Select Options and choose Student Completion from the list.
Optionally:
Select Add requirement and add a completion rule to individual folders.
Select Make all folders sequential and add a completion rule to all folders,
Click Save Changes.
By default, the setting Requirements must be completed in sequential order is selected for top-level folders. If students should complete folders in non-sequential order, only set completion rules for material inside folders.
Completion rules must also be set on materials within the folder.
Set completion rules for folder materials
If a top-level folder in your course Materials page has a Must Complete rule, add completion rules to the items inside. Enable the option for students to complete items in order, so they must finish one item before moving to the next.
Navigate to a course.
Select the folder’s gear icon and choose Student Completion from the list.
Optionally:
Select Requirements must be completed in sequential order.
Select Add requirement, select your material, and then choose a requirement.
Click Save Changes to complete.
The order in which you organize the items in the Student Completion settings has no bearing on the order in which students must complete the rules. The order in which students must complete the items in the course depends on the order in which the folders and course materials are listed on the materials or within the folder.
Check student progress
To review student’s progress:
Select Student Progress from a course’s Materials page to review progress for the entire course.
Select Student Progress from the top page of a folder to review progress for items in the folder.
Recheck student progress
If a student reports completing a rule, but can’t proceed to the next required item, recheck their progress.
Select Student Progress, and then select Recheck Student Progress at the end of the student list. The Student Progress page will refresh and the completion percentages may update.
Bypass completion rules
If using Student Completion Rules, apply the Excused exception in the gradebook to bypass one or more materials with completion rules applied.
To apply this exception, hover over the material's cell in your gradebook, select the flag, and then select Excused. The material will display Excused on the student’s Student Progress page, and the student can continue with the materials in the Student Completion series.
Individually assign materials with completion rules
Use the Individually Assign feature to assign materials to individual students or grading groups of students in a folder with Student Completion Rules.
When individually assigning materials in a folder:
The folder displays but without content on the Course Materials page for students not individually assigned to any materials in the folder. Because there are no requirements for the student, the checkmark displays Complete for the folder.
The folder displays complete in Student Progress for students not individually assigned to any materials in the folder. The Student Progress does not display the individual materials since they are not assigned to the student.
When individually assigning a folder:
The Course Materials page does not display the folder when not individually assigned to the student.
The student displays Complete in Student Progress, but the folder and any associated materials are not displayed since the folder and materials are not assigned to the student.
Copy and save content with completion rules
Student completion rules are retained when you copy or save a folder with completion rules applied to resources.
