Assignments in the elementary experience (instructors)

Learn how to create, manage, and grade assignments in courses that use the elementary theme. The elementary experience provides a streamlined submission workflow designed for younger students, offering up to five ways for students to submit their work.

The elementary theme must be enabled in your course to use the elementary experience assignment workflow. If the Course Theme option is not available in your course settings, contact PowerSchool Support.

Student view

Students in elementary-themed courses can submit assignments using the following submission types:

  • Take a photo — Capture an image directly from their device camera

  • Record audio or video — Record a spoken or video response

  • Upload a file — Attach an existing file from their device

  • Type — Enter a typed response on their device

  • Submit — Submit the completed assignment

Teachers create assignments in the same way as their other courses and can choose up to five submission types per assignment.

Review and grade submissions

Teachers can review and grade submissions as they do with assignments in non-elementary-themed courses.

To access submissions, you can:

  • Select an ungraded assignment from the Reminders section on your home page.

  • Click the name of the student in the Submissions column on the assignment page.

From the submission view, you can:

  • Toggle between submissions by students in the course.

  • Toggle between revisions submitted by the selected student.

  • Grade the current submission and provide a comment (syncs with the gradebook).

  • Provide feedback and upload files back to the student.
