When you use a cross-listing mapping file, the order of your provisioning steps affects how sections and enrollments are created in Schoology.
You can upload a cross-listing mapping file before or after provisioning courses and enrollments. Your organization may follow a standard process, but some situations require a different sequence.
This article explains the results of each provisioning sequence so you can choose the approach that best fits your implementation.
Example used in this article
The examples use the following sections:
-
Target section: Algebra 1 Section 1
-
Sections being cross-listed: Algebra 1 Section 2 and Algebra 1 Section 3
When Sections 2 and 3 are cross-listed, their enrollments are moved to Section 1.
Sequence 1: Upload the cross-listing file before course and enrollment provisioning
Use this sequence when you can obtain the Section School Code values from your student information system (SIS) before provisioning.
Result
-
Upload the cross-listing mapping file.
-
Provision users.
-
Provision courses.
-
Provision enrollments.
Because the mapping file is already in place:
-
Schoology does not create Algebra 1 Section 2 or Algebra 1 Section 3.
-
Enrollments for Sections 2 and 3 are added directly to Algebra 1 Section 1.
-
Sections 2 and 3 do not appear in Schoology.
Sequence 2: Upload the cross-listing file after course provisioning
Use this sequence when the Section School Code values are not available until the sections are created in Schoology.
Result
-
Provision users.
-
Provision courses.
-
Upload the cross-listing mapping file.
-
Provision enrollments.
Because the mapping file is uploaded before enrollment provisioning:
-
Schoology initially creates all sections.
-
Sections being cross-listed are removed after the mapping file is processed.
-
Enrollments for Sections 2 and 3 are added to Section 1 during enrollment provisioning.
When you upload the mapping file, Schoology removes the sections being cross-listed. The course remains in Schoology even if no sections remain.
Sequence 3: Upload the cross-listing file after course and enrollment provisioning
Use this sequence when courses and enrollments have already been provisioned.
Result
-
Provision users.
-
Provision courses.
-
Provision enrollments.
-
Upload the cross-listing mapping file.
Before the mapping file is uploaded:
-
Schoology creates all sections.
-
Enrollments remain in their original sections.
After the mapping file is uploaded:
-
Schoology removes the sections being cross-listed.
-
Enrollments from those sections are moved to the target section.
When you upload the mapping file, Schoology removes the sections being cross-listed. The course remains in Schoology even if no sections remain.
