Use a cross-listing mapping file to add new cross-listings, update existing cross-listings, or remove cross-listings.
Reloading a cross-listing file can permanently remove grades, materials, and assessment data. Review your file carefully before importing it.
Cross-listing file updates
Each time you import a cross-listing mapping file, Schoology replaces the existing cross-listing information with the data in the new file.
For example, if you imported a file that cross-listed two sections and then import a new file that does not include that cross-listing record, Schoology removes the cross-listing.
To add a new cross-listing without removing existing ones, add the new record to your original file and import the complete file again.
Refer to the Cross-listing outcomes document for more information on cross-listing sections and clearing mapping from existing cross-listed sections in Schoology.

Remove a cross-listing
When you remove a cross-listing record from the mapping file and import the updated file, Schoology removes the cross-listing relationship.
Schoology removes enrollments from the target section, but it does not automatically recreate the original section.
To restore the section and its enrollments:
-
Run course provisioning for the affected section.
-
Run enrollment provisioning for the affected enrollments.
For the most reliable results, run a full course provisioning and a full enrollment provisioning.
Data considerations
Cross-listing a section that already contains students, materials, grades, or assessments can result in permanent data loss.
When enrollments move to a target section:
-
Materials do not move.
-
Grades do not move.
-
AMP assessment data does not move.
-
Lost data cannot be recovered.
Removing a cross-listing later does not restore this data.
If needed, export materials and complete a gradebook export before cross-listing so that the materials and grades can be given back to the student once they are enrolled in the target section.
Effect on grades already passed back to the SIS
Grades that were already passed back to the student information system (SIS) before the cross-listing action remain in the SIS immediately after cross-listing. However, the next grade passback from the newly cross-listed section will not include those materials and grades.
For SIS integrations that accept a delete action from grade passback, the previously passed-back materials and grades are removed from the SIS the next time you complete a grade passback action. The delete does not occur at the time of cross-listing.
Full and net change provisioning
Full provisioning includes all section or enrollment records.
Net change provisioning includes only records that were added or changed since the last run.
If your organization uses net change provisioning, Schoology may not have enough information to fully restore a section or its enrollments after a cross-listing is removed.
If you are unsure which provisioning method your organization uses, contact your system administrator.
Restore a removed cross-listing
If a full provisioning run is not practical, you can restore an affected section by:
-
Extracting the complete section records.
-
Extracting the complete enrollment records.
-
Provisioning those records into Schoology.
Remove all cross-listings
To remove all cross-listings in your organization, upload a cross-listing mapping file that contains a single row with placeholder values that do not match any real section school codes.
Schoology interprets the file as having no valid cross-listings and removes all current cross-listing relationships.
A future enhancement will provide a simpler way to remove all cross-listings.
Archived sections
Archived sections can be cross-listed or cross-listing can be removed using the mapping file:
-
Cross-listing archived sections: If you include an archived section in the cross-listing mapping file, it will be cross-listed. A future enhancement will add validation rules to prevent archived sections from being cross-listed unintentionally.
-
Removing cross-listing from archived sections: If an archived section is cross-listed and does not have an entry in the mapping file, the cross-listing is removed.
