Schoology Learning

Create assignments with the OneDrive Assignments app

The OneDrive Assignments app lets instructors assign Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other files directly in Schoology. Students create their own copies to complete and submit, and instructors can review, give feedback, and grade, all within Schoology.

To get started, install the app from the Schoology App Center in your account header.

If you’re also using Microsoft Teams Assignments, disable it to avoid duplicate assignments across platforms.

Create an assignment using the OneDrive Assignments app

  1. From Courses, select the course in which you're adding the assignment.

  2. Select Add Materials and choose Add Assignment.

  3. From Create Assignment, click OneDrive Assignments to open your OneDrive.

    • If prompted, click Connect to approve the app and log in to your OneDrive account.

    • Instructors and students must be logged in to a Microsoft account through their browser to work on and submit assignments.

  4. From Search, enter words or phrases to filter your results.

    • Use single quotes (apostrophes) around phrases to search for the exact wording.

    • Matching items are automatically displayed in the results list.

  5. Select the file from OneDrive to attach it to the assignment.

    • Each Schoology assignment can include only one Microsoft file.

    • To change the file, delete the current one and re-open the OneDrive Assignments app to select a new file.

  6. Enter the assignment details and click Create. The assignment is now available in the course.

    • You can no longer remove the file from your assignment after clicking Create.

    • Students will make a copy of the file to work on and submit it to you directly from Schoology.

  • Creating the assignment sets up a folder structure in your OneDrive for student copies.

  • Do not delete, edit, or rename these folders.

OneDrive folder hierarchy

When you create your first assignment with the OneDrive Assignments app, a Schoology folder is created at the root level of your OneDrive. For each new assignment, folders populate automatically with this structure:

  • A course folder, titled CourseName: SectionName+[ID], inside the Schoology folder.

  • An assignment folder, titled AssignmentName+[ID], inside the course folder.

  • A student copy, saved in the assignment folder. The file name begins with the student’s name, followed by the assignment name and ID.

Example

If you assign Grammar Review in English 101: Section 1, the path is: Schoology, then English 101: Section 1+[ID], then Grammar Review+[ID]

If Hannah Atkins submits a copy, her file is named: Hannah Atkins - Grammar Review+[ID]
