Grading periods define the academic timeframes, such as semesters, quarters, or trimesters, used to organize courses and gradebooks in Schoology.

Courses associated with current grading periods are displayed in Courses.

Courses associated with past grading periods are displayed in the Archived area of users' My Courses.

Grading periods help organize the Gradebook within a course.
Add a grading period

Select Tools and choose School Management.

Click Grade Settings.

From Grading Periods, select +Add Grading Period.

Enter a name for the grading period.

Select a start date and end date.

Optionally, select Add Sub-Period and enter the Sub-Period details. Add additional sub-periods as needed.

Select Add Period.
Add a sub-period
You can create a sub-period when creating your initial grading period, or add sub-periods later.

Select Tools and choose School Management.

Click Grade Settings.

From Grading Periods, select the grading period to which you want to add a sub-period.

Select Add Sub-Period.

Enter the Sub-Period details.

Optionally, add additional sub-periods.

Click Save Changes.
Convert a grading period to a sub-period

Select Tools and choose School Management.

Click Grade Settings.

From Grading Periods, select the grading period’s gear icon and choose +Convert to Sub-Period.

Select the grading period to which you would like to add a sub-period.

Click Convert. Course materials associated with the grading period will now be associated with the sub-period
Converting a grading period to a sub-period moves any course materials currently associated with this period into the resulting sub-period, except Midterm/Finals. Midterm/Finals can only be associated with top-level grading periods, so these items will be moved to (No grading period). You'll need to re-associate them using Edit from the item’s gear icon.
Edit a grading period

Select Tools and choose School Management.

Click Grade Settings.

From Grading Periods, select the grading period’s gear icon and choose Edit.

Edit the grading period details as needed.

Click Save Changes.
Adjust the filter to review archived grading periods.
Delete a grading period
Do not delete a grading period that is already applied to active courses with graded material. Deleting it will change all materials in all associated courses to (No grading period). Instead, edit the grading period dates.

Select Tools and choose School Management.

Click Grade Settings.

From Grading Periods, select the grading period’s gear icon and choose Delete.

If there are no course sections associated with the grading period, and you're sure you want to delete the grading period, click Delete.
To add or remove grading periods for a specific course section rather than system-wide, enter the course and choose Edit Info from Course Options.
