Schoology Learning

Simplified login with QR codes

Overview

QR codes allow younger learners or users who cannot easily use usernames and passwords to sign in to Schoology using a scannable code.

QR Code login is a separate authentication method and does not use single sign-on (SSO).

Students can use QR codes to sign in on:

  • Web

  • iOS app

  • Android app

Students must access QR Code login at https://app.schoology.com/login/qr. If your district uses a custom domain, you can also provide this link as an additional login option.

QR Code login can only be enabled for non-faculty roles, typically students.

Recommendations:

  • Enable QR codes for student roles only

  • Avoid QR code distribution to roles with sensitive access, such as guardians.

QR codes do not expire. If a QR code is reset, the previous code is immediately invalid and a new one is generated.

Enable QR code login

As a system admin, you can enable QR Code Login by building and role.

  1. Select Tools and choose School Management.

  2. Navigate to Feature Options.

  3. Select Enable QR Code Login.

  4. From Select Roles, select each role for whom you want to enable QR Codes. Only non-faculty roles are available.

  5. From Select Schools, select each school for which you want to enable QR Code Code login.

  6. Review your selections.

  7. Click Save Changes.

Manage QR codes at the system level

After enabling QR Codes, system admins can generate and print QR codes.

From Tools, choose User Management, and then select Manage Users. A QR Code column is now available and displays Yes or No for each user. Users that display Yes can sign in using a QR Code.

After a QR code has been printed, a timestamp is displayed with Yes showing the last generation time. The time displays in your local Schoology timezone as configured in your Personal Account Settings.

Bulk print QR codes

You can print QR codes for multiple users at once.

  1. Select Tools and choose School Management.

  2. From Edit Users, select students.

  3. Click Select Bulk Actions.

  4. Select Print QR Code.

  5. Select Print. A print-ready page opens in a new browser tab.

QR codes are formatted for:

  • 2” x 2” Avery label sheets

  • Up to 12 codes per sheet

For best results:

  • Use Chrome when printing

  • Set margins to None in the print dialog

QR codes function like passwords and should be treated as sensitive information. Only distribute printed codes directly to intended users.

Reset QR codes

System administrators with access to Manage Users can reset and print new QR Codes.

For security purposes, reset the QR Code from before printing a new one. When a QR code is reset, the existing code is invalidated immediately, a new QR code is generated, and the timestamp updates to reflect the new generation.

  1. Select Tools and choose User Management.

  2. From Edit Users, select the student.

  3. Click Select Bulk Action.

  4. Select Reset QR Code.

  5. Click Reset

  6. Click Print. A print-ready page opens in a new browser tab.The timestamp in the QR Code column updates automatically.
