Export Usage Analytics data

System administrators can export usage data captured after August 1, 2019. The export includes data for all buildings in the district.

Administrators with the View School Analytics permission can export data only for buildings associated with their account.

Create an export

  1. Select Tools and choose Usage Analytics.

  2. Select Actions and choose Export Report.

  3. Select a date range to include in the export.

  4. Select Next.

  5. Select Export Report to confirm your changes.

When the export is ready, an email notification with a download link is sent to the user who started the export. If the export fails, an email notification is sent to the system administrator who started the export.

Export file format

Analytics are exported as a GZip file. A GZip file is a compressed archive file. Your device may automatically expand the file and open it as a CSV file. If the file does not expand automatically, third-party file archiver software may be required.

Each row in the CSV represents:

  • A user

  • An action

  • A day

  • The total number of actions for that day

  • The UTC timestamp for the most recent action of that type on that day

Download the School Analytics Data Values document for details on the data values in the export file.

Time spent export values

The export file includes Time Spent data for course materials.

  • Time Spent is displayed in seconds in the export file.

  • Values are rounded down to the nearest minute. For example, 2 minutes 20 seconds displays as 120 seconds.

  • Time spent data is tracked across web, mobile web browsers, and the Schoology mobile app (iOS and Android).

  • Time spent data is tracked across all roles in your organization.

Time spent tracking behavior

  • Every 60 seconds, Schoology checks whether the user is still actively using the platform. Tracking stops when they leave.

  • Tracking begins when a user displays a course material and continues while that view remains active (the user does not navigate away or switch tabs).

  • Each continuous view is capped at 15 minutes. If a student reviews a material for 20 minutes without navigating away, the count displays as 15 minutes.

  • If you use the Time Limit feature on assessments, elapsed time may differ from time spent due to this cap.
