Schoology SIS Connect integration overview

Use the Schoology SIS Connect integration to synchronize roster data and pass grades between Schoology and a student information system (SIS) supporting the IMS Global OneRoster 1.1 standard.

SIS Connect keeps data synchronized across platforms and eliminates manual duplicate entry.

Integration requirements

Before implementing the Schoology SIS Connect integration:

  • Your SIS provider must be certified in IMS Global OneRoster v1.1 or actively working toward certification.

  • The SIS vendor must participate as an official Schoology SIS Connect partner, test within a sandbox environment, and provide escalation support.

  • Contact your SIS representative to obtain your API information (SIS Connect domain, consumer key, and consumer secret).

  • Verify that usernames in your SIS do not contain spaces. Usernames with spaces cannot be provisioned to Schoology.

  • Contact your Schoology representative to enable the app in your organization and assist with Data Prep.

Information transferred from your SIS to Schoology

Your SIS acts as the master data source for roster and organizational data. Schoology pulls the following information:

  • School building information

  • Users (staff and student accounts)

  • Grading periods and terms

  • Courses, sections, and enrollments

All information listed is managed in your SIS, and changes and updates transfer seamlessly to Schoology. Changes made directly in Schoology do not transfer back to the SIS.

Information transferred from Schoology to your SIS

Schoology acts as the master data source for classroom grade management. Schoology pushes the following data to your SIS gradebook:

  • Graded items (assignments and assessments)

  • Grade updates (score changes and modifications)

  • Assignment due dates and mapped grading categories

  • OneRoster exception statuses (excused, missing, incomplete, collected)

  • Optional comments under 100 characters (when supported by SIS configuration)

Grade passback supports traditional grading scales through category mapping. New grading categories cannot be created in your SIS via Schoology.

Update frequency

  • Roster provisioning: System administrators can run roster syncs manually as needed or schedule an automated daily sync during a designated time window.

  • Grade passback: Instructors can send grade updates manually from the SIS Connect Teacher App or Gradebook, or configure a weekly course-level schedule.

Integration limitations

  • OneRoster 1.1 does not support attendance data synchronization. Attendance taken in Schoology does not transfer to your SIS.

  • Deleting a user in your SIS does not delete the user account in Schoology; inactive accounts must be removed in both systems.

  • Custom calculated scales, weighted categories, and attendance are not included in SIS passback; only numeric scores and exception statuses sync.
