Exception type details

Exception type	Description	Gradebook impact - flags disabled	Gradebook impact - flags enabled
Absent	The student was absent during the submission	No impact	No impact. Any grade entered along with the flag will be considered in the student’s overall grade.
Exempt	The student was excused from the assignment	No impact	Any grade entered along with the flag will not be considered in the student’s overall grade.
Incomplete	The student submitted incomplete work	No impact	No impact. Any grade entered along with the flag will be considered in the student’s overall grade.
Late	The student submitted the assignment late	No impact	No impact. Any grade entered along with the flag will be considered in the student’s overall grade.
Missing	The student did not submit the assignment	Treated as a zero	Any non-zero score is entered along with the flag; the score will be considered in the student’s overall grade.
Collected	Submitted but not yet graded	No score is recorded until graded	No impact. Any grade entered along with the flag will be considered in the student’s overall grade.

Course administrators can disable the scoring of missing assignments as zeros by changing the Disable automatic scoring of missing exceptions as 0 setting in Grade Setup.
If you change this setting after grades are entered for a course, it will affect all graded assignments for that course that have been marked as Missing.

Exceptions with overdue items

Absent, exempt, late, and collected exceptions remove the item from a student's overdue notifications.
Incomplete does not remove overdue notifications.

I do not accept late submissions.	Missing	When persistence of flags is enabled: The assignment is marked by the teacher as Missing, and the student will receive a zero. The assignment will display in the Overdue section for the parent and student to ensure users receive correct notifications and tracking for missing work. When persistence of flags is disabled: The assignment is marked by the teacher as Missing, and the student will receive a zero automatically. The teacher can also score the submission. Both the grade and the flag will be visible to the student. The assignment will display in the Overdue section for the parent and student to ensure users receive correct notifications and tracking formissing work.
I no longer accept submissions but don’t want it reflected in the student’s grade.	Exempt	The student will continue to receive overdue notifications but no grade impact.
