Create an assignment

Create an assignment

  1. Navigate to a course. Alternatively, click Add Materials from within a folder.

  2. Select Add Materials and choose Add Assignment from the list. Alternatively, click Add Materials from within a folder.

  3. Enter the assignment information. Refer to the Assignment field details and Assignment option details tables for more information.

  4. Click Create. The description and any additional files or links are displayed on the assignment, along with the Submissions and comment tools. From this page, manage assignment submissions, grade students, and participate in the comments area.

Description

Enter directions for students to complete the assignment.

Availability and due date

Select the due date to be displayed in the Course Calendar and Upcoming area. Overdue notifications are also enabled if a student fails to submit the assignment by the due date.

Category

Select a category. The default category, Ungraded, is not displayed in your gradebook.

Period

Select Automatically Publish Grades to immediately display student grades in the gradebook for parents and students. 

If Automatically Publish Grades is disabled, this setting will also be disabled in PowerTeacher Pro when synced with PowerSchool SIS. Other SIS integrations will ignore this setting.

Collected Type

Select Collected/Mastery to disable traditional scoring for the assignment.

  • Collected Type assignments will appear as Collected Only in PowerTeacher Pro. Other SIS integrations will show them as regular assignments with a grade column.

  • Districts using District Mastery can align objectives to Collected Only assignments for mastery grading. Classic Mastery districts can use a rubric with objectives for mastery-only grading.

Scale/Rubric

Select a scale or rubric from the list.

Learning Objectives

Align custom learning objectives, Common Core, Next Generation Science Standards, ACTFL Standards for Foreign Language Learning, College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education, AERO Curriculum Frameworks, or State Standards.

  • Users can use the mastery tool to track students' progress after aligning the material with learning objectives.

  • Common Core, NGSS, College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education, and State Standards are consistently updated in Schoology. Learning objective titles including a year indicate the original publication date, not the most recent update.

Details

Individually Assign

Displays the assignment to specific members of the course or grading group.

Submissions

Allows the student to submit work. You can remove the ability to submit work after the due date has passed.

Grade Statistics

Displays the assignment statistics to students via an icon located with the assignment submissions.

Comments

Allows students to post comments.

Count in Grade

Includes the assignment in final grade calculations.

If Count in Grade is disabled, the setting will also be disabled in PowerTeacher Pro when synced with PowerSchool SIS. Other SIS integrations will ignore this setting.

PowerBuddy

Allows PowerBuddy chat in the assignment.

  • Choose to use the research or Socratic mode.

    • The research mode provides direct explanations in response to students' questions.

    • The Socratic mode asks questions to help guide students through the topic.

  • Choose whether to allow students to review their chat history for the assignment.

Copy to Courses

Copy the assignment with the current settings and options to another course you administer.
