Overview
Student Completion Rules help teachers structure course flow and self-paced learning. Available requirements vary by item type:
-
Must complete
-
Must view the item
-
Must post a comment/reply
-
Must make a submission
-
Must score at least
-
You can add multiple rules to one item, but not the same rule more than once.
-
If a student can’t proceed after completing a rule, recheck their progress.
Set completion rules for folders
Set folder rules so students must complete a folder before moving to the next one.
-
Navigate to a course.
-
Select Options > Student Completion.
-
Optionally:
-
Select Add requirement to add a rule to individual folders.
-
Select Make all folders sequential to add a rule to all folders.
-
-
Click Save Changes.
-
Top-level folders are sequential by default. For non-sequential completion, only set rules for materials inside folders.
-
Set rules on materials within the folder too.
Set completion rules for folder materials
If a top-level folder has a Must Complete rule, add rules to the items inside. You can require students to complete items in order.
-
Navigate to a course.
-
Select the folder’s gear icon > Student Completion.
-
Optionally:
-
Select Requirements must be completed in sequential order.
-
Select Add requirement, select a material, and choose a requirement.
-
-
Click Save Changes.
The item order in Student Completion settings doesn’t control completion order. Students follow the order of folders and materials on the Materials page or within the folder.
Check student progress
To review progress:
-
Select Student Progress on the Materials page for course progress.
-
Select Student Progress in a folder for folder-item progress.
Recheck student progress
If a student can’t proceed after completing a rule, recheck their progress.
Select Student Progress, then Recheck Student Progress at the end of the student list. The page refreshes and percentages may update.
Bypass completion rules
Use the Excused gradebook exception to bypass materials with completion rules.
In the gradebook, hover over the material’s cell, select the flag, then select Excused. The material displays as Excused on Student Progress, and the student can continue.
Individually assign materials with completion rules
Use Individually Assign for individual students or grading groups in a folder with Student Completion Rules.
When assigning materials individually:
-
Students not assigned any materials see the folder without content, marked Complete.
-
Student Progress shows the folder complete and hides unassigned materials.
When assigning a folder individually:
-
Students not assigned the folder don’t see it on Course Materials.
-
Student Progress shows Complete but hides the folder and materials.
Copy and save content with completion rules
Student completion rules are retained when you copy or save a folder with rules applied to resources.
