Scan paper assessments overview
This feature lets instructors scan printed answer sheets for managed assessments in Schoology (AMP only) for automatic grading. Instructors can print answer sheets, have students complete them on paper, and then scan or upload them for auto-grading. This saves time and helps students who need paper-based assessments.
This feature is only available for AMP and is in limited release. System Administrators interested in this feature should contact their Schoology representative.
The Randomize Order setting is not supported for scanning. You can set Randomize Order to Yes when distributing a managed assessment. This randomizes question order only for students taking the assessment online.
-
Printed versions are not randomized. Printed answer sheets are scored using the original question order.
-
If an assessment will be printed and scanned, do not use the Randomize Order setting.
After creating and distributing a managed assessment, instructors can print answer sheets for students. Each sheet includes:
-
Assessment title
-
Student name and email
-
Question numbers
-
Answer bubbles
-
A unique QR code

Scan answer sheets
When students have completed the assessment, you can upload the answer sheets directly to Schoology for automatic grading. Before you upload to Schoology, take pictures of your answer sheets from a device with a camera and upload them to a folder on your computer. Save the image files as JPEG or PDF files to bulk upload directly to the managed assessment.
-
Review the answer sheets before uploading to ensure all bubble marks are identifiable. Any slightly marked bubbles will be scanned in as blank and graded as incorrect.
-
If you have printed multiple versions of the answer sheets, ensure that the sheets you are uploading belong to the same version. Answer sheets that belong to different versions cannot be uploaded successfully and will produce an upload error.
-
If you attempt to print an answer sheet that contains both supported and unsupported question types, an error message will display. The message includes which questions are not supported and the question type. You must remove those questions before printing the answer sheet.
