Schoology assigns each user a single organization-level role, typically through a student information system (SIS) import. For users who need different permissions in specific courses, section override roles provide additional flexibility.
Section override roles allow system or course administrators to apply different permissions to course administrators within a specific section. Users keep their organization-level role, but the section override role takes precedence while they work in that section.

How section override roles work
Section override roles can grant or restrict permissions within a section. While working in that section, the override role permissions apply instead of the user's organization-level permissions.
Icons
The shield icon indicates administrator status in a course or group. If section override roles are enabled, the following icons may appear:
-
-
Shield with star — Organization-level permissions apply. Also used for group administrators.
-
Blank shield — A section override role is assigned and overrides the user's organization-level permissions for that section.
